Butterflies and Flowers

I’ve always felt that flowers and butterflies may be as close as we come to miracles in our daily lives. While the patterns and colors of the flower images remain relatively true to nature, those of the butterflies are wholly imaginary. deriving from the music in my studio. — Bach, Mozart, Beethoven. Their exquisite expressions of theme, merging into infinite —become my sources for patterns and colors as the images emerge.

 The Magnolia Trilogy

“North of San Francisco, in Marin, the magnolias grow huge and white unlike anything I’ve ever seen. One summer, I made a series of three charcoal drawings of cut blooms set under a brilliant overhead skylight. I thought of them as ‘Rembrandtesque’ flower portraits, the glowing petals emerging from the mysterious shadows. Finding them exciting images for gravure etchings with drypoint and aquatint added, I created a limited-edition.”
